Convoys are a special type of Event in Deadside, with a focus on challenging PvP, and dynamic situations
This event will rarely spawn somewhere on the map, always along a road. There will be a heavily armed Convoy Boss, and 15 High Level Military AI Guards that escort the Boss down the road. The Boss itself is extremely deadly, and would be the hardest AI in the game if it were more aware. Once the Boss has been killed, a Convoy Case will drop, and the goal of the player is to take this case to the Safe Zone. The case is constantly marked however, and the player will no doubt be intercepted by other players in an attempt to get an easy kill.
Every Convoy will have a Convoy Boss. This is a heavily armored boss AI, that provides most of the PvE challenge of the event as a whole. A big part of why players go to Convoys, is to simply kill the Boss for his good gear. The Boss can spawn with many different types of gear, he can be seen using any combination of this gear;
Along with the Convoy Boss, there will be 15 other Convoy Patrol Guards, these other AI are unique to the convoy, and are a big contributing factor towards the events overall difficulty. These AI are very accurate, and deadly, combined with their sheer numbers, the Convoy as a whole can instantly cut down even fully geared player squads. Most of these guards will be using AK-SUs, and sometimes AK-SMs, and AK-mods. Out of the 15 guards, there will always be one Sniper Guard. This guard uses a Mosin, sometimes with a Hunting Scope, and has the highest detection range out of any of the AI in the Convoy, including the boss. Its not uncommon for players to be detected and shot at by the Sniper Guard first, with the rest of the Convoy becoming aggressive right after, finishing them off. The 15 guards are often seen wearing Sunglasses, making Convoys the best way to find them. These guards typically wear no body armor, but are often wearing either Ballistic or Tactical Helmets.
While the Boss and his Guards do sound scary, they can be taken down easily with the right strategies. The way the Convoy Group works, is the Boss and his Guards will be walking down a road or path, meaning they will only be looking in one general area. So, its very important to approach the Convoy from behind. This is easy, as you can see the direction that the Convoy is moving on the map, as the map icon moves. While there are many ways to defeat the Convoy, there are typically 3 main methods that players successfully employ:
Just like a Helicopter Crash, you can engage the bots from outside of their effective range, of course, this requires a rifle with a good optic. However, you need some decent hard cover. Even at very far distances, some of the Guards will likely return fire, the Sniper Guard usually being the first, and most dangerous, so it is recommended to shoot the guard holding the Mosin first. The rest of the Convoy will not be that accurate at far ranges, so you will be able to plink them without a problem. It is best to kill the Convoy Boss last, this way you don't risk the Case despawning, or being stolen by other players while you are dealing with the guards.
Using some type of explosive is extremely effective against a Convoy, because it will usually instantly kill the Boss and most of the Guards in one motion. One of the simplest methods is by using Grenades, but is requires a few conditions in order to be safe and effective. The Convoy is extremely aware, and the moment you throw your Grenades within range of them, they will likely instantly turn around and melt you. So, in order to use a Grenade, you need to have a good amount of hard cover to duck behind immediately after throwing the grenade. The ideal situation would be fighting the Convoy in a town, this way you can wait on the other side of a house, throw your Grenade, and then take cover behind the building. If you throw your Grenade effectively, you will kill the majority of the Convoy. Be ready though, as the surviving Guards or Boss will start to push you relentlessly. While this method is risky, it can be extremely effective in the right situation.
Its also possible to use a GRM-40, and blow them up that way. You could also use Tripwires, or even an Explosive Change, and place them in the path of the Convoy. Any way you can get an explosion at the feet of a Convoy, will be very effective.
A good method for fighting the Convoy, is to funnel them into a CQB fight. This requires you have some good cover, preferably some sort of buildling or wall. From there, you can shoot at the Convoy once, and quickly dip back into cover. This should get the Convoy to push towards you, for a brief moment. If you keep repeating this, eventually they will get close enough so that you could use a shotgun, or automatic rifle to quickly kill any AI that comes around a corner. However, at close range, the Convoy Boss is very dangerous, and only a skilled and experienced player will be able to reliably use this strategy to good effect. The bonus of doing this, is so that you actually have some cover to loot behind, opposed to killing the Convoy on the road, where you have no cover at all while looting. If you find a building with only one pathway inside, with good cover, this is perfect. The Convoy will slowly funnel inside, and you can easily headshot each one as they walk in the door.
Once the Convoy Boss has been killed, a Case will spawn on the dead body. As soon as the boss dies, a message is sent to the entire server, that says “Convoy no longer available.” The map icon of the convoy disappears, and is instead replaced by a large yellow circle. This circle will periodically update, and follow the location of the Case. When a player picks up the case, a message will be sent to the whole server that says," [player] has picked up a case." In order to open the case, it needs to be brought to a Safe Zone. Because the yellow circle follows the location of the case as it moves, it becomes quite a challenge for the player carrying the case. Many other players will try and intercept the case holder, in order to score a free kill. So, you will typically see solo players avoid picking up the case, as its not nearly worth the risk. But bigger squads are much more willing to take it, as they generally want the extra PvP. Here is an image of what the convoy case looks like on the map;
One of the best ways to get a Case back to the safezone, is by using an Inflatable Boat, Swamp Boats work also, but they are slower, and you need that extra speed. If you want to run a Case, it would be best to find and park a boat nearby before fighting the Convoy, this way once you get the case, you can immediately jump in your boat, and speed off out of danger. Most of the time, the boat will get you back to the safezone before other players have time to react.
The Convoy Case is a very valuable item, as its the only way to get high tier weapon attachments, like M3 brakes, and extended magazines for ARs. They also consistently drop magnified optics, which is very useful early into a wipe. They can also drop other useful items like explosives, money, and healing. If you are able to get a case to the safezone, it is always worth it.
The Case always drops 5 items in total, with each item coming from its own loot pool. Each item pool is listed below;
